Having eaten at Kota restaurant on many occasions I'm shocked to read the review below. I visit Porthleven many times a year and always make sure i fit in at least one visit to Kota. The food served is always amazing, using good quality local products and fish. I also like how the menu changes from visit to visit so I'm always able to try new things. The most shocking thing is the comments about the service. I really like the relaxed feel they manage to convey, yet i always feel the service is top notch without being over the top and stuffy. I always am made to feel relaxed and welcome, and I remember how on my first visit i was actually very impressed with the FREE homemade bread on offer, many times throughout my meal. Can a restaurant in a small fishing village in Cornwall get away with serving amouse bouche?? All this talk of food is making me hungry!! Im off to plan my next visit to Cornwall!! -

Kota restaurant - A hobby or a profession?
We visited this restaurant and whilst the quality of the food is good, even very good - we felt that it doesn't quite make the grade in a number of areas.
For instance, on entering we were moved from pillar to post as first a waitress told us to wait, then another told us to take our table, and then we were asked if we'd like to have drinks first - which we agreed to - only to be told to take our table.
At the table - we had to wait longer than we'd have liked for drinks to be served, and also, it's preferable to be served bread etc whilst you're waiting to order. When the bread did arrive later - there wasn't much of it.
Whilst waiting, we wondered why, such a restaurant which was not particularly busy (about half full) did not offer amuse-bouche or anything like it. Having read the rave reviews on the Internet - you're expecting something rather good. Not average.
The order was delivered - generally in good time - but sadly part of it over my clothes.
The owners are certainly enthusiastic and eager to please, but one cannot help but feel that it's all done in a rather amateur fashion.
But then again - if you're just going for the food - and no 'polish' - you should be happy enough. -

Well, I've eaten at both and can definitely agree with Katie's review; though I'd add that not only does Kota have the best [and most original] food in Cornwall, but also the most wonderful setting and friendly service. No visit to Cornwall is complete without at least one meal at Kota. -

Can agree with Katies remarks apart from the bit about Rick Steins as I haven't eaten there yet. Went to Porthleven to eat at the Smoke House restaurant and discovered it had closed and moved to Kotas across the harbour. Magnificent food, exceptionally friendly staff giving superb service at very affordable prices. -

This new restaurant in Porthleven is so good that my friends and I went back to eat there again and again. The chef is a genius, giving much of the delicious local organic seafood a light Asian twist. I've never tasted food as good in Cornwall and that includes Rick Stein's. Generous portions make it extremely good value and service was oustanding. Can't rate it highly enough.
