My mum and I eat here every wednesday and it is fabulous! Today I had smoked haddock with herb mash and parmesan cream and it was really gorgeous. Easily the best thing I have had in a long time. My mum had homemade chicken soup which was equally delicious. We have also had the chicken caesar salad and we love the big chunky chips! a lovely resturant with some excellent staff, and a lovely atmosphere. I think it is very reasonably priced too and food is divine!

We went to the restaurant on a fairly miserable midweek evening in October and from the start the welcome of the staff and the bright, unfussy decor helped to warm our cockles and slip us into a releaxed state.
Starting with the mixed tapas (recommended for 2 to share) and a huge bowl of whitebait we were impressed right from the start; gorgeous olives, lovely tangy houmus and a generous selection of italian sausages. Whitebait was piping hot and melt in the mouth with some pretty serious mayonnaise for dipping.
My main course was the Cornish pig (I think that's the name) which for a big slab of pork managed to stay just the right side of being too dry and the mash it was served on was a good consitency and taste. My bloodthirsty tendencies were more than adequately catered for by the 4 or 5 mini boudin noir (or whatever the Spanish equivalent is) which were both thoroughly juicy and delicately spiced. Mmmmmm.
To be honest I can't remember what my partner had for her main course, but I do remember that it was much enjoyed, as I didn't get to have a taste before it was all messily devoured.
Puddings were heartily enjoyed being a serious chocolate concoction and the brioche bread and butter pudding from the specials board (though a little birdy tells me that it's on the board in permanent ink, being so popular). Only one minor concern with the puds was the fairly intrusive dollop of (delicious) clotted cream dumped on the top of the brioche, if it had been nicely quennelled and gently draped to one side it would have made the dish look as lovely as it tasted.
Coffee was good, wine was reasonably priced and a fair selection (maybe a few more Spanish bottles as a nod to the main thrust of the food?) and service was attentive without being intrusive.

The restaurant must also have a good local reputation as by the time we'd had left most of the tables had seen diners come and go. Not bad for the time of the year.

We'll definitely be back for more the next time we're in the vicinity.

We went to the Alverne on a Saturday night without a reservation. It was quite busy but the staff went out of their way to arrange somewhere for us eat.
The menu has quite a large tapas section and although I didn't have any I tried a few bits and peices including the queen olives which were the best I've ever had!
For main course I had pollock on a base of mashed potato. Other options included steak burger, whitebait and a veggie option.
Anyway, my pollock was good - nicely cooked and well presented.
Overall the food was good, with an reasonable choice and the atmosphere was pleasant. I imagine we'll go back

I met several friends for lunch at the Alverne Restaurant in June 2006. My main dish was very pleasant but rather unsubstantial, considering the price. It was described as crab and avocado salad. The small plate contained a layer of creamed avocado, on top of which was a thin sprinkling of crab. Mixed leaves and a small amount of red pepper completed the dish. This was not something I would have again.
The warm brioche with Cornish clotted cream and a mango coulis was very good and so was the double espresso coffee. Some of my friends had the home made soup, which was good too.
I shall return to the Alverne, especially as the service was very pleasant and efficient. There are tables outside for those enjoying al fresco dining.
