The Admiral Benbow review
review by: Chris
01st 2007f January 2007
Had a meal here on New Year's Eve 2006 - It's only just 2007 so forgive any typos!
For starter I had the soup of the day which was smoked hadock. Now, I was thinking, this is part of the Benbow pub, teenage drinkers, nautical memorabilia etc so chicken and chips in the basket a la 1975 - well I was wrong!!
The soup was great - possibly the best soup I've had in a long time. It was pretty rich and loaded with butter, garlic and cracked pepper, but not too much as to overpower the fish. Definite 5 out of 5.
For main I had tuna steak in a sun dried tomato sauce. I was a little worried this might be a little dry or the sauce over complicated. Wrong again! Cooked to perfection and the sauce complimented the fish wonderfully. The flavours were subtle so that everything went together and nothing overpowered the tuna. Again 5 out of 5.
At the end of the day, the service was was very pleasant, the setting reassuringly down to earth and the food excellent locally sourced produce. Everyone else on the table was equally happy with their food and the bill including drinks came out at less than £25 per head (on New Years Eve!)
The only reason I'm not giving a 5 is the coffee, which was instant!!! I'm sure there was a reason for this but it wasn't communicated to us.
But who cares, next time (and there definitely will be) I'll have a brandy!
